About Us
Thanks for stopping by on our website, my name is Rosemary and you will find me within Quillies on East Street in Rhayader (possibly whilst undertaking some kind of crafting - most probably rag -rug making )
Heres a little about Quillies, when, why and how it opened, what we believe in and what we hope to achieve with our little piece of heaven in the heart of Mid Wales.
History:
Quillies opened in July 2016. It was a leap in the dark. I had run Open Studios and stalls to show my own craft of rag-rug making but never done anything on this scale. Looking back at pictures of the shop in its early days it all looks a bit bare. But very soon local craftspeople were coming in to ask if we could sell their products. Now we stock a huge range of crafts from over 60 makers, the great majority of them local. We now have textile crafts, pottery, upcycled clothes, a wide range of jewellery, wood products, and gifts to suit every pocket.
Why ‘Quillies’? The name comes from the circles of rolled up woollen strips I use in my own craft of standing wool, a traditional technique of rag rug making.
That reflects my own passion for upcycling – using old materials and bits and pieces to create something new and unusual. If you look around the shop you might spot new uses for old clothes, cutlery, OS maps, Coke bottles, food packaging and even the off-cuts from pig-pens. The ingenuity of our makers shows how we can all do something to tackle waste in our throw-away society and produce something different and beautiful. The words we hear most often in the shop are “unique”, “unusual” and “quirky” and visitors are amazed at the talent and imagination of our makers.
We also have a programme of workshops in various crafts – rag-rug making, crochet, embroidery and patchwork. Details can be found elsewhere on this site. We sell kits and equipment if you want to have a go at a craft yourself and are always happy to give help and advice.
Our customers come from near and far – locals who love our cards, people staying in the great self-catering and B and B accommodation in and around Rhayader, and people passing through and stopping to enjoy the wide choice of eating and drinking places. Rhayader is bang in the centre of Wales (and therefore the universe), a friendly, bustling place, surrounded by stunning country with great walks and cycle paths on our doorstep. We hope we have added to the attractions of the town – but come and see for yourself.
